Markets in the Algarve-the complete list!

Markets in the Algarve

Whichever day of the month, there is most probably some market somewhere in the Algarve that you can stroll through and breathe in the atmosphere with all your senses. In the Algarve Portugal, you find 3 types of markets: local markets, gypsy market Algarve and fleamarkets.

The most common Algarve market is the daily (except Sunday) fresh vegetable, fruit and fish markets, most towns and villages in the Algarve have one, and are generally located in the centre. The best fish you will find early in the mornings! Mind you, no fish on Monday as the fishermen do not fish on Sunday!

Markets in the Algarve can be classified into three different categories:

Local Markets Algarve

The local, weekly market, where mainly the local produce of the area is sold, often cultivated by the old Portuguese little farmers who will be selling their own products on the markets in the Algarve. Here you will find vegetables and fruits of the season, local products like almonds, dried figs, olives, cakes and cookies. It’s a great opportunity to really get a little sniff of Portuguese culture, as all the locals go there not only to buy their veggies but also to catch up on all the social talk of the area.

It is also here where you will find the best deals. Most weekly markets are on Saturday mornings, though some differ, and it is worth checking locally the exact day and time.
Loulé’s weekly market is known for its vibrant dynamic, Aljezur also has a lively atmosphere. If you want to get the best products, make sure you come early!

New are the organic markets: Lagos has its weekly Vivo Mercado every Wednesday evening, from 18 till 21 hours, with events and music to make it a great and healthy evening out. Lagoa has LagoaBio every last Saturday of the month.

Then there is the monthly gypsy-market, mainly run by the gipsies, though there are also various local sellers. Here you will find a curious mix of products made-in-China (from clothes to plastic to anything you can imagine), agricultural livelihood like trees, seedlings, chicken and ducks and tools related to agriculture; and some local produce with the vegetables, fruits, honey, beans, herbs and spices, cheeses and sausages, etc. Some markets in the Algarve are bigger than others, where there will be particularly much to watch in astonishment. Algoz and Messines are such markets in the Algarve.

Finally, there are the fantastic flea markets in the Algarve, where you can delight in all the beautiful old Portuguese items or find a whole new wardrobe for you and your children. Like all flea-markets, half the pleasure is just wandering through them, the other half is finding that specific item you did not need for a great price. One worth checking out is the market of Barão de São João (close to Lagos), also called the Hippie market, because of its different feel and the many home-made food stalls or the self-made arty crafts.
