Winter in the Algarve?

Winter break in the Algarve???

Algarve Housing can help you!!!!

For the Northern Europeans, Canadian & other North Americans, winter stretches from the October to the end of March. At least 5 months with temperatures below 0º for weeks on end and even colder with the wind chill factor.
Everything is covered with snow. It has even been known to snow on Easter weekend. With these winter conditions, it’s no wonder the idea of finding warmth in the winter is paramount. Many have discovered that what the Portuguese call ‘winter’ , the Canadians call ‘a stroll in the sun’. The golf courses are green, the delicate pink and white Almond blossoms bloom in January and masses of wild flowers cover the countryside from February to May: fields are blanketed with crimson red poppies or bright yellow buttercups with wild orchids hiding among them, all swaying in the warm spring breezes. Amazing lemons the size of oranges and oranges the size of grape fruits! And the sweet taste of these oranges is delicious!

Clear blue skies and sunshine are a very big plus. The great food at reasonable prices and excellent local wine is a big PLUS of the Algarve.
Portugal satisfies all these criteria and more! The Portuguese serve very good food, even in the smallest restaurants. Every small restaurant in towns, offer genuine home cooked meals, usually with a meat and fish dish on the daily special. Good bottle of wine for under €3 in a store. And €10 in a restaurant. AND good winter long-stay rates and good prices on car rentals. All these conditions are in abundance in the Algarve, especially now during these difficult economic times.

Guests in Portugal are most welcome. They are happy to bask in the ‘winter’ sun, all afternoon, while having lunch at a beach café, or while strolling along the beaches in the heat of the day.
Shopping lovers will discover the little boutiques in Old Town Albufeira, Alvor, Lagos, or Portimão that have some of the most unique finds: hand embroidered linen tablecloths, beautiful baby clothes, leather shoes and colourful ceramics and exquisite jewellery.

Please contact me for our special winter break villas in the Algarve, or have a look at our winter rental page!

Cliff Walking Algarve

The Algarve has beautiful beaches, weather, nature and the Atlantic Ocean. The Algarve is the most southern part of Portugal. An ideal way to enjoy all this is a cliff walk!

Praia do Marinho

When you drive to Praia do Marinho (take the turn off from the EN125 opposite International school Lagoa, and follow the signs Praia do Marinho), park you car at the rather large parking space. From here you already have some spectacular views of the golden rock formations and the Atlantic Ocean.

Long and short walks

You can choose to follow the cliff paths to the left, direction Armacao da Pera, or to the right direction Carvoeiro. The paths are sign posted and very easy to find. During these walks you find amazing scenery’s of the magnificent rock formations, and the information boards told me they were between 160 and 180 million years old, amazing! The colours are stunning, and at the moment you find a lot of flowers, among others the blooming Mimosa (see picture). You can make the walk as long or as short as you want!

So get your walking shoes and enjoy some cliff walking in the Algarve.

Top tips for things to do in the Algarve

Quinta Palmeiral

Algarve Housing rent holiday villas in the Algarve, the most southern part of Portugal. Apart from sun, sea and sand, we like to share a few other things to do in the Algarve. Top Tips of people who live here!

What else to do?

Drive to the top of Foia, the highest point of the Algarve, just above Monchique and enjoy the most gorgeous views of the coast with the river Arade, and Portimao. After that, allow yourself to get lost in the narrow, winding roads on your way back and experience the real Algarve!

Sit with a book and a light picnic under the canopy at Caldas de Monchique and enjoy the tranquillity and the sound of the stream.

Take a boat trip by traditional fishing boat, from Tavira to Santa Luzia or Faro Marina to Isle Deserta.

Traditional Algarvian Fishing Boats

Visit the most south westerly point of Europe, Cape St. Vincent; it is breathtaking to sit so high above the Atlantic and watch the waves come rolling in.

Stroll through historic, Moorish town Silves, the original capital of the Algarve, in the back streets the past mingles with the present in perfect harmony. Have a nice coffee on the terrace of Café Ingles, while listening to the Brazilian tunes of the live band…

Take a walk along the coastline from Ferragudo all the way to Praia do Carvalho. It works like a therapy, it will revitalise your soul and you will also feel fitter as a result!

Venture down into the awesome depths of the salt mine under Loule.

Look down on the old tiled rooftops of Tavira from the castle garden, or from the nearby camera obscura.

A round of golf on one of the Algarve’s stunning championship golf courses the Algarve boasts.

Famous Golf Courses

Visit to the Vale de lobo Royal Spa for a day of pampering and relaxation.

Dolphin Trip off the coast of Lagos or Portimao. You will see so many dolphins, you will never forget it!

Buying local honey form roadside sellers. Not only the honey is delicious, it helps local producers too!

This were a few tips, soon will follow more.

Master Bedroom Casa da Praia

Burgau is a friendly and peaceful fishing village, ideal for families, nature lovers and walkers. Nestled on the edge of a national park, still a working fishing village, and watching the boats bobbing on the moonlit waters, makes Burgau a place you will never forget.

Casa da Praia
Casa da Praia - Open kitchen

Burgau and its unique charm is the village ability to appeal to everyone, regardless of age or interests. People who have been once usually come back time after time. It has an X factor that has to be experienced.

Heading west from Burgau, the next village is Salema. There’s an interesting coastal road from Burgau, or an alternative access route down an old river valley from the main road. Facing the glorious beach is a small jumble of restaurants and an occasional shop. The old village extends eastwards up a cliff-hugging road. There are several other beaches along this stretch of coast, most with a beach bar and all of them accessible by road. Surfers are recommended to try ‘Boca do Rio’ or ‘Zavial’.
